If the thought of apps in messages sounds confusing, don’t worry. It’s not as complicated as it may seem. To demonstrate, we will step through the process of downloading a game and starting a game with a friend.

This is an all in one game for iMessage. Play a game of 8-ball pool or challenge your friend to defeat you in the battleship game. By far game pigeon is the most comprehensive game you could play from iMessage. It has got multiple game options for you and your friend to enjoy a great time challenging each other. For our example, I will download a game called GamePigeon. This app contains several different games you may enjoy playing with friends. Downloading an App in iMessage

To get started, open the Messages app and select a contact like you would normally do to send a message to a friend. To the left of the text entry field, you will see three gray colored icons (a camera, a heart, and the letter “A” for the App Store). Tap the icon for the App Store. If you see an arrow in a gray box instead of the three icons, tap the arrow to reveal the three icons.

After tapping the App Store icon, you will see a window that typically shows the last app used or recently used apps in iMessage. In the bottom left corner of the window, you will see four gray dots. Tap this icon to display the apps currently installed on your device.

By default, you will see apps for Store, Recents, #images, and Music. Tap the Store app to open the App Store for iMessage.

The iMessage App Store shows all the apps that can be used with iMessage. Across the top there are three navigation tabs: Featured, Categories, and Manage. The Featured and Categories tabs allow you to browse the App Store. The Manage tab allows you to manage which apps appear in iMessage on your device.

You can browse the App Store and download whatever app you want. For our example, I will download a game called GamePigeon. This app contains several different games you may enjoy playing with friends. Once you locate the app, it can be downloaded to your device by tapping the Get button.

Play a Game in iMessage

Once the app is installed, you can now use it in iMessage. Create an iMessage to a friend, tap the App Store icon, and tap the four gray dots to show the apps installed on your device. Tap the app you want to use. In our example, we will select GamePigeon.

GamePigeon contains several different games within the app. For our example, we will select a game called Sea Battle. After we make our game selection, a game invitation appears in the message. Send this invitation to your friend.

If your friend already has the game installed on their device, they can begin playing immediately. If they don’t have the game installed, they will get a link to download the game to start playing.

Playing games with friends using iMessage is convenient because each player takes their turn whenever they read their messages. Both players don’t have to be online at the same time.

1. Start by positioning your ships around the board. All players can move their ships as they wish. You cannot put them diagonally, but you can put them horizontally and vertically. You want to keep the ships far enough apart so they don’t sit right next to each other. If you do this, the boxes around the ship will turn red until you move them.
2. Guess where your enemy placed his or her ships. You can pick one square at a time. If you land in water, the box will get a dot in it. If you hit the ship, you will feel a slight shake on your phone, and you will see smoke. If you hit a ship, you can guess again. If you miss, it is your enemy’s turn.
3. When you have successfully guessed all the squares your enemy’s ship sits in, you will see the ship appear and all the dots around the ship will fill in.
4. Keep going until you have hit all of your opponent’s ships.

The game goes back and forth and can take a long time to play, depending on how fast your opponent answers. If you want to play a shorter game, you can change the size of the grid and decrease the number of ships.

When positioning your boats, be smart about it. Don’t put everything into one corner or put every ship around the edges. This is a good way to create a pattern people will easily see. You also want to change up your strategy every time you play the game.If you are going to put any ships along the edges of the board, consider putting the biggest ships there. This way, you can eliminate the number of free spaces your opponent gets when they do sink your big ship. As the biggest ships are the ones most likely to be struck first, you will take away some of your opponent’s advantages.

If you have large areas of open water, this is the best place to put those little ships which are really difficult to find. Usually, these are the last ships of the game. They aren’t captured in the checkerboard pattern if you place them well.

The best thing you can do for the offense is to think about your placement. Don’t just allow the AI to set them up for you. Think about a checkerboard and pick a color (this is a strategy we will talk about in defense). Do not place all your small ships on what would be the same color.

When you are guessing which squares to hit, there are a few different things to consider. The first is that your opponent will have done many of the same things you did in the offense. Start by guessing around the edges and then moving your way into the center.

When guessing, most people will guess in a checkerboard pattern. This involves thinking of the Battleship board as a checkerboard. Pick either red or black and only aim for those squares. This will help you to pick up many of the boats, but not all of them. Some people decide to make a giant X with every other square to help divide the board.
