The TSSAA last week released its six-tier football classifications for all Division 1 schools that included lots of movement across the board.
With 294 football-playing schools across the state, each classification will house 49 teams with eight regions averaging six teams apiece for the next two school years - 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Here’s how Region 1 and Region 2 might look for each of the classifications when released next month by the TSSAA:
Class 6A (enrollment 1497 and greater) – Bradley Central 1579, William Blount 1605, Maryville 1616, Morristown East 1619, Cleveland 1671, Bearden 1823, Farragut 1946, Hardin Valley 2006, Jefferson County 2079, Science Hill 2285, Dobyns-Bennett 2364
Projected Region 1 – Morristown East, Bearden, Jefferson County, Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett
Projected Region 2 – Bradley Central, William Blount, Maryville, Cleveland, Farragut, Hardin Valley
Some projections have Region 1 simply trading Morristown West for Morristown East. But with just 11 Class 6A schools East of the Cumberland Plateau, my thought is the TSSAA will want to even the regions as much as possible.
How that would be divided also provides a difference of opinion. Some suggest William Blount would be the Region 1 assignment, but I’m sticking with Bearden as it’s less travel mileage for the likes of Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill.
If Region 1 does stay the same, Region 2 would be left with just four schools, including Maryville which would have to find seven non-region games.
Even with a seven-team Region I, it’s tough for Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett to find four games and with a leaner region, the two would be tasked greater to find more. So much so, the two have discussed playing twice on the season.
For now, Dobyns-Bennett has informal agreements with Tennessee High and West Ridge in weeks one and two as schedule-makers at West Ridge were told to ‘make a game against Dobyns-Bennett happen.’ I mean, why wouldn’t the two Kingsport schools face off?
Science Hill and Maryville have apparently agreed to play. Overtures to Science Hill by Alcoa have also been made, but that initially seems unlikely.
Daniel Boone has apparently requested back on Science Hill’s schedule as well as it appears Dobyns-Bennett has limited interest in another two-year set with the ‘Blazers. The Dobyns-Bennett vs Oak Ridge series appears doubtful as well.
Class 5A (enrollment 1115-1496) – Tennessee High 1116, Cherokee 1121, Clinton 1125, Cocke County 1143, Knox Halls 1188, Lenoir City 1228, David Crockett 1231, Knox Central 1233, Sevier County 1247, Daniel Boone 1288, Howard 1280, Powell 1290, Campbell County 1308, Ooltewah 1321, Karns 1352, McMinn County 1430, Knox West 1444, West Ridge 1448, Heritage 1463, Morristown West 1477, Oak Ridge 1496
Projected Region 1 – Tennessee High, Cherokee, David Crockett, Daniel Boone, West Ridge, Morristown West
Projected Region 2 – Cocke County, Knox Halls, Knox Central, Sevier County, Knox West, Heritage
Some projections have Cocke County staying in Region 1 instead of flipping to Region 2, but moving to Region 2 more evenly distributes both regions…if that matters.
Class 4A (enrollment 762-1114) – Chattanooga Central 772, Knox Carter 802, Scott 815, Elizabethton 856, East Ridge 859, Sullivan East 877, Hixson 885, Grainger 894, Greeneville 910, Fulton 914, Sequoyah 930, Seymour 961, Gibbs 988, Volunteer 1012, South-Doyle 1032, East Hamilton 1065, Soddy-Daisy 1081, Anderson County 1114
Projected Region 1 – Carter, Elizabethton, Sullivan East, Grainger, Greeneville, Volunteer
Projected Region 2 – Scott, Fulton, Seymour, Gibbs, South-Doyle, Anderson County
Some projections have Seymour instead of Carter in Region 1. As the crow flies, the mileage would indicate as such, but real world travel gets Elizabethton to Carter quicker than Seymour.
Also note that Carter, Fulton, Gibbs and Seymour all chose to play up to Class 5A in the previous cycle. If some or all do the same again, the impact on region assignments would be significant in both classes.
Elizabethton also chose to play into Class 4A in the last cycle to improve its region schedule while also avoiding Alcoa in the process. Would the Cyclones consider a move to Class 5A this time around for the same reasons?
Class 3A (enrollment 542-761) – Gatlinburg-Pittman 562, Chuckey-Doak 584, West Greene 596, Johnson County 624, Pigeon Forge 639, Alcoa 655, Union County 668, Kingston 687, Austin-East 732, Claiborne 747, Unicoi County 749, Northview Academy 759
Projected Region 1 – Chuckey-Doak, West Greene, Johnson County, Claiborne, Unicoi County, Northview Academy
Projected Region 2 – Gatlinburg-Pittman, Pigeon Forge, Alcoa, Union County, Kingston, Austin-East
Northview Academy and Union County could very well flip to keep all Sevier County schools in the same region. Also, if Alcoa plays up to 4A as rumored, both could be in Region 2.
Class 2A (enrollment 375-541) – Rockwood 382, Hampton 383, Wartburg 383, Oneida 386, Happy Valley 456, Meigs County 505, Cumberland Gap 523, South Greene 526
Projected Region 1 – Hampton, Happy Valley, Cumberland Gap, South Greene
Projected Region 2 – Rockwood, Wartburg, Oneida, Meigs County
Leaving four teams in both regions would create an imbalance across the state, but expanding both would create also vastly expand the geography and thus travel expense.
Some have suggested that Wartburg or Oneida could join the Region 1 fray thereby opening the door for Bledsoe County, Polk County, Tellico Plains and/or Tyner Academy in Region 2.
I’m still sticking with the less-desired format above, which means all eight teams will make the playoffs each year.
Class 1A (enrollment 0-394) – Oakdale 140, Sunbright 152, Coalfield 162, Cloudland 189, Greenback 239, Midway 247, Oliver Springs 281, Hancock County 290, Jellico 280, Unaka 323, Harriman 333, North Greene 342, Cosby 347
Projected Region 1 – Cloudland, Hancock County, Unaka, North Greene, Cosby, Jellico
Projected Region 2 – Oakdale, Sunbright, Coalfield, Greenback, Midway, Oliver Springs, Harriman
With Cosby and North Greene both sliding from Class 2A to 1A, Region 1 likely expands by two teams. Region 2 is already full with seven teams.
Also, don’t look for North Greene to be duped by the other Greene County schools into playing up to Class 3A again either.
